Black History Change the Month
“THE HISTORY”
Carter G. Woodson, a prominent historian and author, is credited with establishing Black History Month in February 1926. Woodson believed that Black people should be proud of their heritage and that all Americans should understand their achievements. He dedicated his life to educating African Americans about their ancestors’ contributions. Woodson famously wrote,
“If a race has no history, if it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated”.
WHY FEBRUARY?
Woodson chose February for Black History Month for both traditional and reformist reasons. February includes the birthdays of two important figures in Black history, Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, whose birthdays are on the 12th and 14th, respectively. The Black community had also celebrated Lincoln’s birthday since his assassination in 1865, and Douglass’s birthday since the late 1890s.
WHO SIGNED IT?
President Gerald Ford officially proclaimed February as Black History Month in 1976, and it has been celebrated every year since.
Our response: For decades African Americans, Black Americans have been celebrating BHM in February without even asking why, other than knowing the obvious that BHM absolutely should be celebrated. Now, some may rebuttal, we even heard some celebrities such as The Great Actor Morgan Freeman on interviews proclaiming “There shouldn’t be a BHM because Black History is American History” which I agree with the latter.
It is American History!!! Unfortunately, there are still systemic racial components and individuals who still uphold damaging, racist, ideologies. As one of our Great legendary Hip Hop artist Mr. Chuck D put it in his song Fight The Power, “People People we are the same, NO we’re NOT the same because we don’t know the game!
WHY THE CHANGE NOW?
Every year, February rolls around and everyone realizes “Oh it’s BHM. Do you want to know what comes across Black people’s minds? I’ll tell you
It’s the shortest month of the year
Who came up with that month?
It’s cold outside
Everyone is getting ready for the Superbowl and countless award show.
Black Families love cookouts and family gathering needs, can’t do that in February.
We love family Reunions
We love to celebrate.
